HTML5 is the latest version of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), invented by Tim Berners Lee, while employed at CERN. A W3C Recommendation was released by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 2014. The Recommendation was a collaborative effort by the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) and W3C.

It introduces:

• new "semantic" markup
• Canvas element for 2D drawing
• Web Storage
• Extensions to the browser Document Object Model (DOM)
• Media playback
• Drag and Drop

Other related technologies associated with HTML5 but published as separate Recommendations are:

• Geolocation
• Web SQL Database
• Indexed Database API
• HTML5 File API
• Web workers
